BHBM Sponsors Second Annual Tour de Lis Bike Ride
Saturday, April 18, 2009
8:00 AM

New Orleans Lakefront

Registration is NOW OPEN for the Second Annual Tour de Lis bike ride on the New Orleans lakefront.

The brainchild of a small group of local biking enthusiasts, this remarkable event raised $165,000 for cancer survivor support organizations last year. The goal for 2009 is 1,000 riders and $250,000 according to Carol Asher, one of the organizers.

Registration is open to all recreational and elite cyclists at www.tourdelis.com The cost of registration is $35. Team entries are also accepted. Interested participants and sponsors can obtain more detail on the event's information website.

The recreational ride begins at 8 a.m. and is a 10-mile loop, with the route including scenic Lakeshore Drive and the beautiful lakefront area, with the last riders coming in at noon. It will be followed by a criterion for elite riders.

Along with a special recreational opportunity for all riders aged 12 and up with a bike helmet, the outing is for a most worthy cause, as indicated by the slogan, "Healin' through Wheelin."

Proceeds from Tour de Lis benefit the CAGNO, (Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans), protecting and defending the New Orleans community against cancer through education, outreach, and assistance for cancer patients in need; Lance Armstrong Foundation committed to making cancer a local and national priority; Planet Cancer which exists to provide young adults with cancer, peer support and advocacy.

The Tour de Lis Task Force is comprised of volunteers in the New Orleans community all personally impacted by cancer, a leading cause of death in the United States. "We all understand that whether you are a patient, caregiver, family member or friend, everyone must help in the challenges fighting this deadly disease," said Asher.

Tour de Lis 2009 Honors community leaders who have survived Cancer: Bill Oliver, Sally and Ron Forman and Kim Sport. "All of us agree that information and knowledge are essential to this fight and strongly support the efforts of Tour de Lis to help people with Cancer survive and thrive," she added. "It is truly a ride with a purpose."
